Sheet Metal Fabrication, Machining Q&A

What Is the Purpose of Oil in Sheet Metal Stamping?

China stamping fabrication

The founder of FORMEXTECH has been engaged in metal processing since 2000, and established his own small processing factory independently in 2010.At FORMEXFABTECH, we have spent over 20 years crafting custom metal-stamping components for our customers.

We sometimes receive stamped sheet metal parts with excessive oil residue, especially mild steel / iron parts.

It is normal for stamped sheet metal parts, especially iron/steel parts, to have some oil on the surface. This oil is stamping oil, used for lubrication, cooling, die protection and rust prevention during the stamping process.

It is a standard requirement for the stamping process to ensure good formability and surface quality. The oil used in processing plays an essential role.

stamping fabrication
  1. Lubrication & Friction Reduction

Reduces friction between sheet metal and dies, enabling smoother material flow, stretching, and bending, preventing jamming and scratching.

  2. Die Protection

Lowers die wear, overheating, and material adhesion, extending die life and reducing downtime for maintenance.

  3. Prevent Scratches, Wrinkles & Cracks

Creates a uniform oil film for even force distribution, especially in deep drawing and complex forming, improving dimensional accuracy and surface quality.

  4. Cooling

Dissipates heat generated by high-speed stamping, avoiding softening and dimensional instability caused by overheating.

  5. Rust Prevention

Provides short-term surface protection against corrosion during processing and storage.

One-sentence summary:

Stamping oil = lubrication + die protection + quality assurance + rust prevention.
