Epoxy Board CNC Machining: Material Quality Makes All The Difference

Raw material quality is the biggest hidden factor for CNC machined epoxy fiberglass parts. Same CNC machine, same cutting tool, but cheap poor-grade sheet will lead to delamination, fuzzy edges, chipping and high scrap rates.

Common issues from low-quality epoxy sheet

  1. Delamination: Fiberglass layers peel off at edges or hole walls, parts become unusable.
  2. Voids & bubbles: Hidden air pockets inside laminate cause sudden chipping during milling.
  3. Warpage & thickness variation: Hard to clamp flat, dimensions drift out of tolerance.
  4. Frayed fibers: Extra deburring work, fragile thin features crack easily.

Quick Selection Tips

✅ Precision parts, thin walls, small holes: A-grade FR4 or G10

✅ Simple low-tolerance insulation panels: 3240 for cost saving

✅ High voltage electronics: UL certified FR4

✅ Best practice: Run test cut before mass production, catch material defects early.

Visual inspection to judge the quality of epoxy sheet

✅ Good quality epoxy sheet

  1. Surface Uniform colour (pale yellow / beige), flat and smooth. No white spots, bubbles, dents, scratches or resin lumps. Even matte finish, no patchy gloss.
  2. Cut edge (most critical check point) Dense cross-section with fine, even glass fibre texture. Layers are tightly bonded, no gaps or delamination. No powder or debris when scraped by fingernail.
  3. Fibre condition Fine fabric weave fully saturated by resin, no large exposed white glass fibre areas.
  4. Touch Dry surface, no sticky or greasy feeling.

❌ Poor quality epoxy sheet

  1. Surface Uneven colour with many white patches, air bubbles and pinholes. Some areas have thick resin buildup while others lack resin and expose glass fibre.
  2. Cut edge Porous cross-section with visible gaps between layers. The edge frays, sheds powder and delaminates easily when scratched. Insufficient resin impregnation.
  3. White discoloration Large white areas mean poor resin wet-out. The panel tends to absorb moisture and delaminate later.
  4. Dark specks / discolouration Plenty of black impurity spots usually indicate recycled raw material, low mechanical strength.

2 quick visual tricks

  1. Tilt the panel under strong light: Good sheet shows consistent light transmission; poor sheet has dark patches and voids.
  2. Check cutting edge: Neat clean cut for good sheet; frayed, split layered edge for poor sheet.

Quick notes for purchasing

  • Too dark / black colour: Likely recycled epoxy board with weak strength.
  • Large white patches: Poor impregnation, prone to water absorption and delamination.
  • Delamination & powdering on cut edge: High scrap rate during CNC machining, avoid purchase.

Visual QC checklist for epoxy sheet:

  1. Flat surface, no bubbles, white spots or impurities.
  2. Dense cut cross-section, no delamination or powder loss.
  3. Uniform resin impregnation, no large exposed glass fibre.
  4. Clean edge after cutting, no fraying.
