How Is Anodizing Masking Achieved?

Anodizing masking methods are selected based on workpiece shape, size, surface complexity, and production batch, with four commonly used techniques in industrial applications:

• Adhesive Masking Tapes

  Made of high-temperature and chemical-resistant materials (e.g., silicone or polyimide), these tapes are ideal for simple shapes like holes, edges, and flat surfaces. They are easy to apply and remove without leaving residues, making them suitable for small-batch production or prototype machining.

• Silicone Plugs/Caps

  Custom-machined to match the size of holes, threads, or protrusions, silicone plugs/caps offer excellent resistance to anodizing electrolytes and high temperatures (up to 200°C). They provide tight sealing, preventing electrolyte penetration and are reusable, suitable for batch production of parts with standard-sized holes.

• Masking Liquids/Paints

• These are specialized coatings that form a tough, peelable film after drying. They adhere well to complex curved surfaces, irregular contours, or narrow gaps that tapes or plugs cannot cover. After anodizing, the film can be easily peeled off or cleaned with solvents, ensuring no damage to the workpiece surface.

• Mechanical Masking

  Using clamps, fixtures, or protective plates to physically cover large areas or specific regions. This method is stable and repeatable, making it suitable for mass-produced workpieces with consistent masking requirements (e.g., large structural components or assembly surfaces).
